Kids’ Converse taps into a century of style
Converse shoes have captured the eye of athletes and style leaders for a little over a century. Today, kids’ Converse remain the perfect shoe to add to a casual but active rotation, allow young ones to express themselves with a wide array of colours and styles.
With a Little Help from Chuck
In 1908, Converse began as the Converse Rubber Shoe Company, and within a decade it manufactured one of its first basketball shoes, the Non-Skids. After hiring Charles “Chuck” Taylor, a semi-professional basketball player, to the sales team in 1921, Chuck encouraged the company to create a better, more flexible and supportive shoe. In 1922, the shoe that would become known as the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star was released.
Chuck Taylor helped sell the shoe to basketball players and teams across the country, cementing its popularity on the hardwood. Its classic rubber outsole made it a favorite for players looking for reliable traction during the game.
In addition, from 1936 to 1968, Converse earned its place as the official shoe of the international games.
A Place Within the Culture
Keeping up with the culture of post-WWII America, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star infiltrated youth culture much like T-shirts and jeans. The shoes became popular with kids of all ages, including athletes, artists, and musicians. They were the perfect cost-effective, durable, unique shoes that separated youth from their parents. The individualistic style established during the ’50s and ’60s has stuck with kids’ Converse kicks, making them the ideal choice for anyone who wants to define themselves.
Running Parallel on the Court
During the ’50s and ’60s Converse maintained their dominance on the court. All Stars were the first choice for high school, collegiate, and professional basketball teams across the country. They kept a presence on the professional court through the 1980s.
The ’80s and Beyond
During the 1980s, Converse kicks experienced a resurgence as casual kicks. They were viewed as retro and classic. Since then, Converse has solidified its place as an unbeatable classic. The wide variety of colours and styles has made it a go-to for those looking to add a statement piece to their wardrobe.
A New Start
In 2003, Converse became a part of Nike’s umbrella of premium brands. This helped Converse widen its reach with its classic designs. Converse has since released new styles with more cushioning, tried out upper materials ranging from classic canvas to leather (and even corduroy), ensuring everyone can find the unique look that matches their style. In addition, Converse provides shoes in Infant sizes with easy-to-wear hook-and-loop closures, and in Toddler, Preschool, and Grade School sizes.
